SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!

Well, everyone except for the public school district my kids are part of are out of school. Yah, you guessed it...RUSD! Yay, me!

A week or so less days that I have to find things to do to keep my kids active and engaged during these long-awaited summer days, I guess. I'm looking at the positive and it's so exciting the opportunities the kids have whether it's jumping into one, some, or a ton of the choices that Just Add Kids has listed in our Camp JAK Kids Summer Camp & Program Option Directory, doing something with the family or friends, free play in the yard, or just chillaxin'. Summer really needs to be a mix of all of that. Dontcha think? Read more....

I encourage you all to check out our website's JAK Happenings Calendar of Events A LOT! There are three of us that add events to that calendar on an on-going basis. Even if you check it once a week, you are bound to miss out on something! Put it on your calendar, to regularly check our calendar!

Our weather has been far from seasonable. I've been waiting for those 80 degree days, and I so far...not so much! Yet soon, (and I cannot wait), we'll be looking for indoor escapes to beat the heat.  There are a number of indoor activity centers for families with kids of all ages. Here's a list:

America's Action Territory - (Kenosha) A wide choice of indoor and outdoor attractions, games and food selections. Indoor options are: arcade, bumper cars, BallOCity, laser tag, and The Heist.
Monkey Joe's - (Kenosha and Waukesha) Children’s party and play destinations with 9 giant inflatable jumps and slides perfect for children 12 and younger includes the Mini Monkey Zone area for children ages 3 and younger.
Chasing Tales for Kids - (Opening Soon!) - (Oak Creek)  An indoor playground that offers both recreational and educational experiences for young children. Available for free play, birthday party hosting, story time, and special events.

Family Tree Haus -(Franklin) Indoor playground for children up to 10 years old.
JumpZone - (Franklin) Party and Play Center which features massive, themed inflatable slides, obstacle courses and bounce houses kids love, interactive games, toddler activities and more.

The Big Backyard, LLC - (New Berlin) An indoor playground and birthday party center that provides a fun, clean, and safe place for children ages 0-8 to play, celebrate special events, and learn through our enrichment opportunities.
Helium Trampoline Park - (New Berlin) Features 140 trampolines with Open Jump All Day Everyday!
Kids In Motion - (New Berlin) Open Play area for toddlers/preschoolers, laser tag for ages 5 and older, arts and crafts, and cafeteria.
StoneFire Pizza Company - (New Berlin) A state of the art arcade area with touchscreen arcades, classic pinball, and old standbys like skee-ball; bumper cars, mini-bowling, multi-level BallOCity, Frog Hopper ride, candy store, buffet & sports bar!
Sky Zone Milwaukee - (Waukesha) Indoor trampoline park offering active fun for all ages.

BOREDLike I mentioned earlier, free play is part of a healthy mix. Kids need to use their imagination to fill in some of the time. I know in my home they'll all be gravitating toward the TV, Wii, Nintendo-DS, iPad, laptop...you get the point. And I'll be pointing them to the Legos, the art cabinet, the book shelf. My kids really don't mind to be given a project to do, if it's not presented as a chore.

I hope this blog post helps to fend off the B-word we as parents so many times hear from our children.

Here's to a summer full of activity, relaxation, awesome weather, and fun! CHEERS!

A Great Summer Read

Library Summer Reading Programs of Heroic Proportions! by Just Add Kids Founder, Paula Herrmann Reading over the summer months can make a huge difference for kids when they get back to school in the fall. With a lack of summer reading, children can actually loose up to three months in reading skill. Summer reading loss is cumulative, leaving some kids years behind as they get older. By the end of 6th grade, kids who lose reading skills over the summer may end up being two years behind their classmates. Wow! I know, you don't want your kid to end up on the low end of the reading spectrum. Don't let your kiddo's reading skills take a blow this summer. Read more... Our area libraries have once again come to the rescue in offering summer reading program incentives under "Every Hero Has a Story" and/or "Escape the Ordinary",  this years themes for a nationwide summer reading program collaborative of public libraries. Silly Banned

The Rubber Obsession I think my 6 year old son was the first in his class to be told he can no longer wear his silly bands or Silly Bandz (not sure if they are the real thing, or imitation, who really cares?!) to school.  That was already back on September 2nd, his second day of first grade.  That started it's own trend, the full blown ban of those rubbery. colorful, object-shaped bracelets in his classroom.  Perhaps we'll see the full school ban in the future, or has the fad run it's course? If you're a pair of dad entrepreneurs, you hope not!  They recently jumped on the Silly Bandz craze and brought to market The Original Silly Stand , designed to do what else, but keep those crazy rubber bands organized. In my house, I think we need a Silly Bandz detector. I swear, we must have a over 100, but who even knows where they are (although I dedicated a container for each of my younger silly band wearers).  The funny thing is, my kids aren't wearing them a...
